ClimaCOP2: What remains of the ‘Paris Prophecy?’

A collaborative ethnography of climate governance promises and climate obstruction  at COP30 in Belém, Brazil

ClimaCOP 2 is a collective ethnographic project focused on the COP30 climate conference in Belém, Brazil. The French-German-Brazilian team brings together around fifteen researchers to document, from the Amazon, the tensions of a global climate politics in crisis. Building on previous work that has highlighted how narratives and promises have become central instruments of today’s climate governance, the project explores how these promises are formulated, ritualized, and contested — and how obstruction strategies also draw on their own “economies of promise” aimed at delaying action. The team includes members from the original collective inquiry at COP21 in Paris, alongside new participants.

The project is funded by the Climate Social Science Network and the DFG Humanities Centre for Advanced Studies “Futures of Sustainability”
